Streetwear and its Relationship with Luxury Fashion
For a long time, what was considered luxury fashion positioned itself far from streetwear, each with its own codes, key pieces, and spaces. But this relationship has been narrowing over the years.
Luxury brands are increasingly flirting with the aesthetics that come from the streets, resulting in a high-end urban style, which some call luxury streetwear. And currently, this is what's capturing the attention of influencers and fashionistas worldwide. Continue reading to learn all about it.
From the Streets to the Runways
There's no doubt that the streets have invaded the world's fashion weeks. But how exactly did this happen?
The rise of Hip Hop culture, countless new series/movies portraying urban culture, the influence of sportswear, and society's own rapidly changing behavior have all served to break paradigms and create new desires in our minds. Black people and people with real street experience leading major brands are also responsible for this shift, where the streets now call the shots.
Understanding this emerging behavior is fundamental for major fashion houses, which need to adapt to the new market trends.
Refined pieces, such as towering heels and traditional shoes, almost always omnipresent at fashion weeks worldwide, now appear alongside various sneaker models, many of which have long been familiar to skaters and basketball players. And where else would skaters and basketball players be but on the streets?
From there, pieces easily seen on streets worldwide, such as: caps, tank tops, nylon and tactel pants, jackets, and sweatshirts, are invading even the collections of brands with essentially classic DNA. A few years ago, it would have been impossible, for example, to imagine Balmain, Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, or Versace incorporating streetwear elements into their shows. Today, it's a reality. They have respectively collaborated with other urban brands/artists such as: Puma, Pharrell Williams, Stussy, Virgil Abloh, and Kith.
The practicality, versatility, and usability of fabrics, trimmings, and prints have allowed the streets to invade these shows and break the paradigm that street fashion and its pieces could not be considered high luxury items.
With an entire culture behind it, streetwear is much more than just a trend. Urban pieces feature a more relaxed, casual, and uncomplicated style of dressing. However, with the hustle and bustle of everyday life, this factor also works in favor of street style, this hype, democratic, and accessible culture that translates onto runways and streets worldwide.
