Cargo Pants Look, where it all began

It seems that the cargo pants look was created in the 1940s, during World War II, and was primarily used by the British army, and later by the American army. The main idea was that the many pockets would be used to carry ammunition and whatever else soldiers needed to survive in their environment, in addition to their thickness and fabric being designed to allow greater mobility and offer more resistance.

Due to its utilitarian nature, the item was used for a long time by factory workers and construction industry employees. This continued until the 90s when urban culture absorbed and adapted it to what was being worn at the time, presenting the pants with a low waist and much wider fit.

At this time, it was quite common to see cargo pants being worn by skaters and in the Hip-hop scene. The item was widely embraced by the female public with artists like Christina Aguilera and members of the Spice Girls incorporating it into their wardrobes.

Another change that accompanied this “first resurgence” of the cargo pants look was regarding the fabrics, which began to have variations, from denim to lighter fabrics like tactel.

Cargo Pants Looks, in the 2000s

In the 2000s, cargo pants remained present in fashion discussions for a while but didn't sustain themselves much, becoming more of an item for the off-road, trail-hiking public.

Until more recently, in 2019, the Streetwear public brought cargo pants back into fashion circles. Much of the credit for this is given to the Kardashians and rappers like Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, among others.

Today, the pants are designed with a higher waist and feature a much wider variety of cuts and fabrics, with pieces that are more fitted to the body with fabrics ranging from denim to fleece.
