The origins of Punk Fashion

In English society, based on monarchy traditions, and while the hippie movement was seen as utopian, the antagonistic and seemingly violent punk movement arrived. With spiky and colored hair, the excessive use of black clothes and pointed and grotesque accessories, punks occupied the streets with a rebellious attitude, as a way of asserting the voice that was not given to the youth of the time.

In 1971, Vivienne Westwood and her husband Malcolm McLaren opened the store Let it Rock in London, which sold clothes and artifacts in the 50s rock style and would later inspire the aesthetic of punk fashion. After controversies and problems with authorities, in 1975 the store was renamed SEX, when it also started selling sex shop items, and Malcolm McLaren, with the aim of promoting the store, founded one of the biggest rock bands: the Sex Pistols. This band cemented punk as a cultural and aesthetic movement. At the same time, in the US, the punk movement was also gaining popularity, with bands that followed the style and less colorful looks than in England.

The characteristics of punk fashion

Over time, punk fashion symbols made their way onto the runways with designers like Jean-Paul Gaultier and Zandra Rhodes who incorporated the style into their collections.

With authentic pieces and compositions that celebrate authenticity, there are some key elements of punk fashion, such as the use of dark clothing, layering, plaid print, ripped items, and DIY elements, the use of accessories with studs, safety pins, and spikes, and rigid fabrics like leather. Some of these elements have accompanied the punk aesthetic since the beginning, and others have been incorporated by subsequent generations who appreciated the style.

Currently, punk fashion has undergone several changes, incorporated elements from other styles like streetwear, and can be seen inspiring collections from various brands. What remains unchanged is the rebellious and revolutionary essence that the style carries.
